Flash Fiction Entry 3-23-2012

Madness



“One more. One more. One more.”

Live cords slithered over the mossy rocks as he bent creaking bones to place his next treasure. His hole-riddled coat, too thin for this darkness, slipped off one hunched shoulder. When the light was perched, his gray eyes darted up the line, analyzing. His sticky tongue smacked with disapproval.

Madness whipped his head to stare back the way he’d come. He picked his way down, straining to not loose his tenuous grasp.

He counted the rubber-covered snakes as he went until one waterlogged bare foot touched a coupling. “One. Two. buckle my sho—”
